Data Logger

With the help of data loggers, oceanographic and geophysical parameters can be monitored cost-effectively and in real time or recorded for later analysis. Nautilus Marine Service GmbH offers a wide range of data loggers and sensors from the Canadian company RBR Ltd. Based in Ottawa, the name RBR stands for the development and manufacture of highly precise sensors and data loggers for applications in oceanography, limnology, geophysics, as well as groundwater and polar research.

Two main factors summarize RBR’s Generation³ instruments: USB-C as the standardized connection and AA batteries, ranging from alkaline to lithium, used in every device.

To easily identify an RBR Generation³ instrument from an older logger, an important mechanical component is highlighted in red for better distinction.

Other important updates of the Generation³ include a further reduction in the instruments’ power consumption, for example, the RBRconcerto³ CTD is now the oceanographic CTD on the market with the lowest power consumption. The input voltage range has also been expanded to 4V to 30V.

The sampling rates have also been improved with | fast8 and | fast16. For CTDs mounted on rosettes and other specialized applications, RBR has developed a data rate of up to 32Hz: | fast32.

Sensors

RBR sensors are industry-leading in terms of accuracy, stability, and power consumption, even under the most challenging conditions.

Their industry-leading low power consumption enables long deployments at depths of up to 6,000 meters, making them the perfect choice for many oceanographic and limnological applications, such as monitoring boreholes, remotely operated underwater vehicles, current measurements, and harbor water levels.

The real-time sensors have the following features:

  • High accuracy,
  • Low power consumption,
  • Long deployment times,
  • Compact and lightweight,
  • RS-232-Output,
  • MCBH-6-MP-Connection,
  • Depths down to 6000 m

Available sensors:

Temperature (T), pressure (D), dissolved oxygen (DO), optical dissolved oxygen (ODO), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), radiometer (rad), fluorescence (Fl)

Underwater battery canisters

The RBRfermata battery canister significantly extends the deployment duration and versatility of your underwater instruments. It automatically detects the type of battery cells used whether lithium (3.6 V), alkaline (1.5 V), or NiMH (1.2 V) and configures the internal arrangement accordingly to consistently provide the required nominal voltage.

Equipped with 48 D-cells and three MCBH connectors, the RBRfermata is available in either 14 V or 28 V configurations. With an energy capacity of up to 2.8 kWh, it delivers approximately 40 times the capacity of a standard battery pack, making it ideal for long-duration deployments.

An innovative battery carousel and tool-free quick-release latches allow for fast and easy battery replacement even in the field. For specialized applications such as integration with the Wirewalker (DMO), a version with low-profile handles is available for flexible installation.

For added safety, polyfuses are built in to provide overcurrent protection and will automatically reset after a fault.

As an alternative, you can also extend your deployments using the compact RBRfermette³, which features a single MCBH connector and holds 8 AA cells.

Smart-battery-canister

The RBRcervata seamlessly combines the RBRfermata underwater battery canister with the RBRcervello data controller, delivering expanded power and data capabilities for standard RBR instruments. This integrated solution extends deployment durations by up to four years, thanks to its high-capacity power supply and onboard memory.

At scheduled intervals, the RBRcervata automatically transfers data from the connected instrument to its internal memory. It also enables advanced deployment features, including:

  • Instrument reconfiguration,
  • Real-time clock synchronization,
  • and rotating memory management for extended data logging.

Instruments can be connected or disconnected at any time. Power delivery remains uninterrupted, even when the data controller enters deep sleep mode, ensuring continuous operation without data loss or downtime.

Key Specifications:

  • 128 GB onboard memory
  • Up to 3.3 kWh energy capacity
  • Built-in overcurrent protection
  • Pressure relief valve for safety
  • Three MCBH connectors
  • Operational depth up to 4000 m
